A reliable sandustry factory build uses separate modules for intake, wetting, Shakers, sorting, collection, and later refining. Give every transformation a visible input and output, protect Water from uncontrolled Sand contact, and route byproducts into buffers that cannot feed backward. Scale the first module that visibly fills while the next stage is working, rather than copying an unsupported universal ratio. This design survives terrain differences and Early Access balance changes because it is built around documented material behavior.

Lay Out the Core Loop First

Begin with a controlled Sand intake beside, but not inside, the Water reservoir. Allow a measured stream to touch Water and become Wet Sand, then drop it across diagonally placed Shakers. Separate Gold immediately because it drives Research, and move Residue or the current-version byproduct into its own buffer. Do not add thermal or plant processing until this loop can run and stop cleanly.

Build these zones with maintenance access between them. Sandustry’s simulation makes the materials themselves part of each connection, so a narrow hidden chute is harder to diagnose than a slightly larger open chamber. A good build can be paused at its input while downstream material finishes moving. That operating property matters more than visual symmetry.

Shape Water as Infrastructure

Water is consumed in the wet-sand reaction and can move through terrain and some buildings. Keep the main reservoir away from uncontrolled dry Sand storage, then use a limited contact zone for production. The official beginner guide describes pumps, pipes, and Liquid Vents for most fluids other than lava and recommends separating fluid lines. Add that system only when it makes the Water boundary clearer.

Use containment that has been verified in your current build because corner leaks and material interactions can defeat an assumed wall. Leave an inspection channel around the reservoir and avoid placing the main Gold route below it. If a leak appears, stop the Sand intake before attempting a repair. Exact reservoir size and consumption per production target are Pending confirmation without a current versioned test.

Sort at Shallow Depth

Filters work best when selected material can physically reach the block. The official Filter page warns that tall mixed piles may leave lighter pixels above denser ones, preventing them from falling through even when configuration permits it. Extract dense or critical material early and keep the stream shallow. Chain basic Filters for multiple outputs because each one uses a single selected material.

  1. Open the falling branch below the first Filter.
  2. Configure Allow for the dense or critical output, such as Gold.
  3. Send the horizontal remainder to a second stage or overflow.
  4. Keep Water out of the sorter so materials do not change inside it.
  5. Test a small mixed batch before opening the Shaker bank fully.
  6. Stop intake if either branch fills back toward the Filter.

Every branch needs a capacity limit you can see. An overflow is not wasted space; it is evidence showing which stage needs attention. Avoid looping overflow directly to the intake, because that can create a growing recirculating pile. Manual recovery should be possible without dismantling the main line.

Move Material Across Height

Use Conveyor Belts for horizontal solid transport and Launchers for vertical or diagonal routes. Both operate without power according to the official beginner guide, making them dependable early infrastructure. Give every Launcher a clear landing zone and prevent a return arc into Water or a different material branch. More launchers do not solve a full destination.

Reserve vertical shafts on the map before stacking the factory. A modular tower can work, but only when each floor has enough headroom for falling material and enough side access for maintenance. Leave a route for the player that does not cross active output streams. Exact launcher spacing and maximum useful pile size are Pending confirmation because official sources do not publish a universal blueprint.

Extend into Thermal and Plant Processing

The current Research page documents Burner Belts supplied by Thermal Buffers, Kinetic Press processing of Burnt Residue, and Planter Boxes for Wet Seeds. Add each as its own module with an upstream buffer and downstream buffer. Confirm the live material names before configuring Filters because official pages have used differing terminology across revisions. Keep hot processing away from the Water front end.

The Planter Box allows Gold and Amethelis through while Wet Seeds touching it become Flowers. That makes the area below the box a collection interface, not a foundation to seal casually. Wet Seeds should arrive from a contained Water stage so the planting module does not flood the sorter. Growth times, yields, and the ideal number of machines are Pending confirmation and should be measured in your build.

Scale by Watching Buffers

Run one controlled batch, stop intake, and identify the first place material continues accumulating. If the Shaker input fills while outputs remain clear, add Shaker capacity or improve the drop. If outputs fill, repair sorting or transport before adding machines. If the Water stage fails, expansion elsewhere is irrelevant.

Use this scale-up checklist:

  • Every module can be stopped at its input.
  • Every byproduct has a deliberate buffer or next process.
  • Every Filter can be reached and cleared.
  • Every Launcher lands in a bounded, visible zone.
  • Water cannot reach dry storage or solid sorting unintentionally.
  • Factory and exploration routes remain visible on the map.
  • One module can be rebuilt without removing the entire chain.

Do not label a layout “optimal” from appearance alone. Terrain, research, upgrades, and material physics can change the result even when the blocks match a screenshot. Record the game version and test conditions if you publish a numeric benchmark. This guide intentionally makes no unsupported throughput, cost, or tile-count claim.
